Counseling Exam Review

It's In There!

The hard work paid off! I passed the exam TODAY!!! Linton is right; you have to take the question at face value and remember to use the assumptions and strategies in Unit 1 of his review. And go slow. I spent about 80% of my study time on the simulations, which helped tremendously. I did each of them at least once over the course of about 8 weeks and probably did half of them twice. At times, I worried that I wasn't spending enough time on the raw information, but I kept plugging away. The first couple weeks I think I failed the simulations 90% of the time. I also purchased the study guide and had it printed inexpensively. This was useful when I was traveling to my in-laws or right before bed when I didn't have my computer on. I did not read the entire study guide, but found the sections on disorders, assessments, and treatments very worthwhile for my confidence and decision-making ability. While I was preparing, if I didn't know the answer I often looked it up in the DSM - not always, but usually. Overall, I felt prepared for the exam, but I knew I had to "bring it" and stay focused which I had to remind myself to do a few times during. Being prepared doesn't mean it was super easy and I could have passed with my eyes shut because I definitely could not have done so! Critical thinking was very important. My way of studying may not work for you, but perhaps you will find it helpful. GOOD LUCK!!!

I was wondering...I take the exam on 9-14-09 and wondered if the simulations on the study guide were more difficult or about the same as on the real exam.

Congratulations on passing the NCMHCE. Please tell me, who is Linton. And how do I obtain his material?

Good job Sarah - now keep those CEU's up to date so you never, never, have to take this again - PS. Those letters after your name look sweet!
